What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic Medicine is a variation of primary healthcare that focuses on combining traditional natural therapies with evidence based clinical research. To simplify, Naturopathic Medicine uses multiple modalities to stimulate the body’s own healing properties, which can look entirely different from one unique person to the next. Naturopathic medicine is the art and science of disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention using natural therapies including: botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, hydrotherapy, homeopathy, naturopathic manipulation, traditional Chinese medicine/acupuncture, lifestyle counselling and health promotion and disease prevention.

Is naturopathic medicine covered by insurance?

Naturopathic medicine is not currently covered by OHIP, but may be covered to some degree by most extended healthcare plans. Variation exists between how much is covered yearly for visits and/or labs and supplements, please contact your insurance provider to understand your extended healthcare plan. FG Integrative Medicine does not currently participate in direct billing, so the cost of treatment is applied in clinic and patient are responsible for sending invoices.

How does naturopathic medicine differ from conventional medicine?

This is an excellent question, and I like to explain the following scenario to help my patients understand the difference: Imagine two patients with headaches walk into a family doctor’s office. The family doctor will likely prescribe some variation of pain medication to both patients. Great! Problem solved right? Wrong. Both patients may get headache relief, but the underlying reason WHY they get headaches in the first place wasn’t addressed. Now, the same two patients walk into a Naturopathic office. One receives gut support and the other gets body work for tight musculature. And guess what? They get better, they have less headaches, dust starts to settle on that pain prescription medication. This is Naturopathic Medicine: even though two people may have the same chief concern, they are exactly that… two. different. people. They are unique individuals, they deserve treatment that is equally as unique to address their root cause.

What are your hours of operation?

I am available to book in-person or virtual visits Monday to Friday between 10am and 7pm. I have also opened up patient availability on Saturday’s between 10am and 4pm.

How are naturopathic doctors trained, educated and licensed?

Accredited Naturopathic Medical Schools are four-year, in-residence, hands-on medical programs consisting of a minimum of 4,100 hours of class and clinical training. During naturopathic medical school, students are educated in the biomedical sciences as well as the latest advances in science in combination with natural approaches to therapy. They also study disease prevention and clinical techniques. In addition to a standard medical curriculum, schools require their graduates to complete four years of training in disciplines such as clinical nutrition, acupuncture, homeopathic medicine, botanical medicine, physical medicine, and counselling. For the final year of their medical program, naturopathic medical students intern in clinical settings under the close supervision of licensed professionals.
